How to launch a cannabis topical in Canada.
A practical guide for brand owners — what the path from idea to provincial shelf actually looks like, written by the team behind PROOFLY, Canada's #1 cannabis topical.
1. Choose your format
Creams, balms, salves, roll-ons and bath bombs each carry different cost structures, fill formats and shelf expectations. Look at what's selling in the category you want to enter, and decide whether you're THC-free or full-spectrum — it shapes everything downstream.
2. The licensing reality
You do not need your own processing licence to launch a topical in Canada. Manufacturing happens under a licensed processor's licence — Lupos is GPP-licensed under the Cannabis Act — through a white-label or private-label program. Your brand, made compliantly under our licence.
3. Formulation and pilot batch
Two paths: start from a ready-to-launch in-house formula (fastest to shelf), or have an existing formula re-engineered for Canadian compliance and manufacturability. Either way, insist on a pilot batch you approve before full production — it's how surprises get caught at kilogram scale instead of at 200 kg.
4. Real numbers
At Lupos, topical programs start at 200 kg (2,000 bottles × 100 g) and tinctures at 90 kg (3,000 × 30 g), with 6–8 weeks standard turnaround and a 2-week rush option, on transparent cost-plus pricing. Whoever you work with, get MOQs and turnaround in writing before you commit.
5. Packaging and labelling
Cannabis topicals require compliant, child-resistant packaging and Cannabis Act labelling. An automated co-packing line (Lupos runs from 2,500 bottles) keeps unit costs predictable and the labels compliant.
6. Getting on shelves
Products reach consumers through provincial boards (such as OCS, AGLC and BCLDB) and medical channels. This is where a manufacturer with its own distribution matters: Lupos sells PROOFLY through 10 provincial boards and 15+ medical partners and can list client brands through the same channels — so the launch plan can include the shelf, not just the warehouse.
